Vision Utilities' foremen have taken a giant leap forward to empower the next generation of electrical utility workers with their new Groundman Training Course.

Preparing Tomorrow’s Utility Workforce

As you know, storm restoration is the heart of what we do. But we're also committed to fostering the growth and development of the next generation of electrical utility workers. With this in mind, came the Vision Utilities Groundman Training Course, led by Vision Utilities superintendents and general foremen. This program equips those aspiring to advance their careers within the utility industry, with the confidence and expertise needed to succeed in the field.

A Comprehensive Training Curriculum

This course offered a thorough and well-rounded curriculum that covers all essential aspects of being a groundmen. Participants receive entry-level training in safety protocols, basic electrical theory, and the proper use of tools and equipment. All, while the trainers emphasize the importance of job responsibilities and effective teamwork, preparing participants for real-world scenarios.

This comprehensive approach ensures that participants are not only knowledgeable but also confident in their ability to perform their duties safely and efficiently.  Superintendent Mike French shared, " It was a unique opportunity to train and evaluate the guys without the pressure of outages - we don't have time to always teach in the field, it's always an emergency. "  By addressing both theoretical and practical components, the program provides a solid foundation for future advancement within the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Hands-On Experience: From Classroom to Field

One of the key features of the Groundman Training Course is its emphasis on hands-on experience. training begins with an indoor session, where participants engage in informative and engaging classroom instruction. This indoor session lays the groundwork for the practical skills that will be put to the test in the field.

Following the classroom session, participants move outside to our Alabama yard to apply what they have learned in real-world settings. This transition from theory to practice is crucial for reinforcing the knowledge gained and ensuring that trainees are comfortable and proficient in their roles. The hands-on experience not only enhances learning but also builds confidence and competence among the participants. One attendee described the training as 'engaging, impactful, and informative,' emphasizing the value of the hands-on experience and the practical knowledge gained.

Another participant praised the program for its focus on 'education and togetherness,' underscoring the collaborative and supportive environment fostered by the trainers. These testimonials reflect the program's success in delivering a meaningful and beneficial learning experience for all involved.

Paving the Way for Career Advancement in the IBEW

For Vision Utilities, this training represents more than just an opportunity it’s part of our ongoing commitment to our team. By encouraging our crews to take part, we ensure their skills stay fresh, their knowledge stays current, and they remain prepared to take on the challenges of every project.
